Mail can filter junk mail from your inbox, based on what it learns from you when you mark email messages as junk or not junk and the settings in Junk Mail preferences.

Microsoft Outlook is usually provided along with Microsoft office and has a good built-in junk mail filter. It’s can be made more effective with some user in.

• It turned out that I had to go directly to the email source's website, which in this case was Gmail, and change my junk settings there. Apple Mail was perceiving the incoming mail as 'Not Junk', but because Gmail was viewing it as junk, it was still going to my Apple Mail junk folder.
• To classify a message as junk and move it to your Junk E-mail folder, Ctrl+click or right-click a message header and then click Junk Mail Mark as Junk. To classify a message as junk and block the sender, Ctrl+click or right-click a message header and then click Junk Mail Block Sender. Add important people to your Outlook contacts.

Tip: If you don’t like spam, make sure the junk mail filter is on. Choose Mail > Preferences, click Junk Mail, then verify “Enable junk mail filtering” is selected.

Mark messages as junk or not junk

1. In the Mail app on your Mac, select a message.

2. Do one of the following:

   • If Mail incorrectly marked the message as junk: Click Move to Inbox in the message banner or click the Not Junk button in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar). Mail moves the message to your Inbox.

   • If Mail failed to mark the message as junk: Click the Junk button in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar). Mail moves the message to the Junk mailbox.

Each time you confirm a message as junk or not junk, the junk mail filter improves so Mail can better identify junk mail.

Change junk mail filter settings

The default settings catch most of the junk mail you receive, but you can customize the filter.

1. In the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, then click Junk Mail.

2. Specify what Mail should do when junk mail arrives.

   • If you want to verify what the filter identifies as junk mail, select “Mark as junk mail, but leave it in my Inbox.”

   • If you’re sure the filter accurately identifies junk mail, select “Move it to the Junk mailbox.”

     Note: To make sure the filter’s database is used to identify junk mail, don’t change the default condition “Message is Junk Mail.”

3. Select options for exempting messages from being evaluated, such as messages received from people who use your full name.

4. To include in the filter any junk mail detection inherent in messages, select “Trust junk mail headers in messages.”

Reset the junk mail filter

Resetting the junk mail filter to its original state removes what Mail learned from you whenever you marked emails as junk or not junk.

1. In the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, then click Junk Mail.

2. Click Reset.

No one likes spam or junk email. The Outlook 2016 for Mac Junk Email Filter doesn't stop delivery of junk email messages, but does the next best thing --- it moves suspected spam to the Junk Email folder. We recommend you regularly review messages in the Junk Email folder to check for legitimate messages that were incorrectly classified as junk. If you find a message that isn't junk, drag it back to the Inbox or any folder.

About junk e-mail protection

When the filter finds a message that appears to be junk, Outlook does the following:

• Moves the message to the junk e-mail folder for that account.
• Assigns the message to the junk category.
• Blocks any embedded pictures in the message. In some cases, downloading the pictures in a mail message lets the sender know that your mail address is active. If a junk mail sender knows that your address is active, you are more likely to receive additional junk mail from that sender.
